The League of Legends 2023 ranked season begins and a new era of LoL Esports is ushered in. Along with the squad swaps, there have been many changes in the regions themselves. With the start of the new esports calendar year , the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) is the next international tournament everyone's eyes on.
Riot Games presents a new format for MSI 2023 ; overhauled the whole system to make it more fun.
One of the biggest tournaments in LoL Esports history, MSI 2023 is hosted by London , the United Kingdom this year so much so that London Mayor Sadiq Khan was part of Riot's State of the Game developer video.

There is a lot to be announced regarding the format changes for MSI 2023 . A total of 13 teams will participate in MSI 2023 as the LPL, LCK, LEC and LCS are taking two teams each. As TCL has disbanded and LCO supposedly merged with PCS, a representative will come from VCS, PCS, LJL, LLA and CBLOL.
The new MSI format will have two phases instead of the previous year's three phases; Play-ins and Brackets. Also, all games at MSI will be double elimination, and this is the first time in an international tournament for LoLEsports. As always, teams heading to MSI 2023 will depend on each region's Summer Split results (both Winter and Summer for the LEC).
Let's talk about the teams in each stage and what the individual stages will consist of.

To sum it up, the teams that advance to the next stage for MSI 2023 are the group winners and the winners of the Losers Group Finals.
The Bracket stage will also feature eight teams, including five auto-qualified teams from the main regions and three teams progressing through Play-Ins. Here are the teams that automatically qualified for MSI 2023.
As DRX won Worlds 2022, LCK automatically took 2nd place to qualify for the Bracket stage. The remainder of the Group Stage teams will be from the three teams that win in the Playoff Stage. In total, eight teams will play in the top 5 double elimination groups to reach the finals and lift the MSI 2023 trophy.
Teams are expected to be randomly drawn to play each other in the first stage and then progress through the Winners/Losers Group to win the Grand Finals. All-in-all, the format is designed to have lots of explosive gameplay.
MSI 2023 will start on May 2 and will run until May 21. More information will be released in the coming months, stay tuned.
With the new format , MSI 2023 is preparing for a renewed LoL tournament. With the new format it should be fun to watch more teams from the major regions. This type of environment gives us a way to build narratives, help teams gauge international strength, and provide some exciting games for fans to watch.
