The Call of Duty Twitter account said that the beta of Black Ops Cold War was the most downloaded series in franchise history. There are no statistics to confirm this. The statement also echoes what publisher Activision said in 2019 about the beta of Modern Warfare being the "biggest in franchise history".

Activision recently detailed Black Ops Cold War's new 40-player game mode called Fireteam. Four teams of 10 fight against each other to complete objectives and engage in combat. After players die, they can respawn on a teammate, parachute onto the map, or spawn in the seat of a teammate's car. This is reminiscent of the Battlefield 1 mod Conquest. Also, the Zombies mode has been confirmed, along with the confirmation that cross-play and cross-save are supported.
