The Riot dev team recently published an article titled State of Mods in 2023, saying they're working on new mods like RURF and Ultimate Spellbook that will add variety to the core LoL experience.
League of Legends game modes:
They haven't given a proper name to the game mode yet on their dev blog. They even jokingly called it the "She's Joking-Her-Code-We Don't-Name-Project." Until Riot makes a statement, the new game mode will be called "2v2v2v2" for now, as it is still in development.

─────────────────────────────────────────────
Riot Games touched on some important points about the first game mode to be released in 2023 in their new developer diaries . First, they want players to engage in PvP combat. This includes minimizing time spent dead. They also mentioned that they want to take champion customization beyond its limits.
Mechanism
The gameplay of this upcoming game mode will be unique compared to the traditional League of Legends. First, there will be a regular selection system and players will be divided into a team of 2, with a maximum of 4 teams. The 2 teams will battle each other in several deathmatch style rounds.
After each round, players can earn items, levels, and mod-specific power-ups called boosts. Then, when a team loses enough rounds, it will be disqualified until one team is standing.
Our goal is to add variety to what you can do with champions and pave the way for unique and exciting combat. Here are a few examples of gameplay tests:
- Sylas wielding Lissandra's W every 5 seconds
- Ekko with 500 Attack Range
- Kai'Sa plunges into the enemy team and is killed within seconds, then a massive explosion that dramatically reduces their remaining health to their opponents.
Judging by the concept, Tactical Battles is very similar to the Ultimate Duo game mode. Even Riot mentioned that the 2v2v2v2 game mode was inspired by the game in question.
Additions
Riot hasn't shared much information, as the League of Legends 2v2v2v2 mod is still in development. But they talked about Add-ons, which is the core gameplay feature.
Addons are power-ups designed to create unique builds for champions. Using this feature, players can increase their champion's base power or transform their champion into something unique. They can also create unique combat situations for their champions.
Riot has not disclosed any further information, as most Add-ons are still in early development.
While Riot didn't mention it, according to leaks, the upcoming game mode will have its own separate and unique map. They were also playing on the Nexus Blitz map The Temple of Lily and Lotus in the preview screenshots. So we can assume that the game mode will have a new map.
Riot has stated that they want to release the new game mode around July next summer. Thus, they will release the 2v2v2v2 mod at an experimental stage, similar to Nexus Blitz.
